Wand Cores

Dragon Heartstring

This powerful core produces wands capable of the most flamboyant spells. Spells can be learned quickly. Dragon Heartstring wands can change allegiance if won from their original master and always bond strongly with their current owner. Capable of being turned to the dark arts and can be prone to accidents in the wrong hands. This core would make an excellent choice for casting hexes and defensive spells.

Known wands of this core:

Hermione Granger, Viktor Krum, Bellatrix Lestrange, Minerva McGonagall, Garrick Ollivander, Peter Pettigrew, Dolores Umbridge.

Phoenix Feathers

Although capable of a wide range of magic, it is difficult to be chosen by this core. The phoenix feather is one of the rarest cores. Allegiance of this core is often hard-won. The phoenix is thought to possess healing powers through its tears. A great core for protection spells and lasting charms.

Known wands of this core:

Harry Potter, Lord Voldemort, Silvanus Kettleburn, Celestina Warbeck.

Unicorn Tail Hair

Wands of this core produce consistent magic and bond strongly to the original master. Unicorn hair is difficult to turn to the Dark Arts and is less subject to fluctuations. While this core does not produce the strongest magic, the wand wood may compensate. These wands may turn melancholy if seriously mistreated, the hair may die and need replacing. This core is a wise choice for one who wishes to cast healing and protection spells.

Known wands of this core:

Mary Cattermole, Cedric Diggory, Neville Longbottom 2nd, Remus Lupin, Draco Malfoy, Quirinus Quirrell, Sybill Trelawney, Charlie Weasley 1st, Ron Weasley.

Veela Hair

Very temperamental, with a lot of ups and down, this wand core is rarely used. Wands with this core give a boost to outdoorsy magic, divination, and charms. Possessing an inherent intelligence, this core is popular among Ravenclaw.

Known wands of this core: Fleur Delacour

Thestral Hair

Generally regarded as an unstable wand core, the Elder Wand is the only known wand that uses it. It is assumed that one must be able to see Thestrals in order to use this wand core. It is also thought that a wand with Thestral tail hair can only be mastered by someone who can face death.

Thunderbird Tail Feathers

This powerful but difficult to master wand core is good for Transfiguration work. Like the bird the feather is taken from, these wands are able to sense danger and have been known to cast curses on their own.

Occamy Feathers

The Ocammy is known to be a choranaptyxic, it can shrink or grow to fit available space. Ocammy wands can also shrink or expand to fit available space and excel at magic that deals with shrinking or expansion. This wand core demands an owner that is not easily startled.

Bowtruckle Bark

Bowtruckles live in and protect trees of wand wood quality. As a core they are ideal for herbology, care of magical creatures, and transfiguration. They are even-tempered unless aimed at the destruction or harm of trees or plants. Bowtruckle bark is particularly potent when paired with rowan.
